Montenegro 2003

The history of the fire service in this region is rich with tradition and experience. The FRDP will make maximum use of those qualities and traditions in developing a flexible, yet effective plan for the Montenegrin Fire Service. Assistant Chief Rossetti has met with European Union (EU) officials and local fire chiefs to begin this process.

20 June 2003 Assistant Chief Francesco Rossetti has begun a two-part fifty day mission in Montenegro (CG). The goal of the mission is to create a plan for the development and reorganization of a national fire service. Beginning in Podgorica, (the capital of Montenegro), the FRDP will assess the overall condition of the fire service, including fire equipment, training and organizational infrastructure.

25 August 2003 Chief Triozzi, A.C. Rossetti and Chief's Aide Berisha will be holding a high level conference with the European Union and the Montenegro Fire Chiefs in Podgorica the week of 8 September. The meeting will serve to launch the reorganization of the Fire Service in Montenegro by the F.R.D.P. The change will transform it from the current municipal system to a National Fire Department.

Apparatus

Most pumpers and tankers in the region date from the 1960's-1980's and the condition of the pump panel indicates the age and wear on the apparatus. This is the only ladder truck in the Podgorica, but remains out of service due to mechanical breakdown as does other equipment.

Facilities & Communications

Most fire stations are in need of repair or replacement as is their communications equipment. There is hope though with the construction a new mega-station and more modern communications equipment.

Equipment, Mountain Fires & Personnel

Firefighters use whatever is available to get the job done. In this case using typical nozzles and even oxygen bottles in place of missing compressed air tanks to save lives. Firefighters have little defense against forest fires which are common. Both advanced training and equipment are necessary to battle these fires successfully.
